EFFECT OF COVID ON A NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANISATION.
EFFECT OF COVID ON A NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANISATION.
The coronavirus pandemic has affected almost every country of the world with many of them taking warlike measures. Since its first case in December 2019, in China’s Wuhan province, thousands are dying every day, work has been shut and the world is about to witness a global economic slowdown. In such trying times it becomes important to audaciously take measures to help the Non-Profit Organisations who strive for the delivery of essential services.
The Non-Profit Organizations, henceforth NPO’s provide services, goods, and resources to meet the community needs. They assist the society for smooth economic development and lends a helping hand in bringing positive social changes. Despite being a bosom friend of the government, the leaders’ world over (especially India) is neglecting the relevance an NPO has when it comes to service delivery at the grassroots level.
The NPO’s behave like a polymath given their deep knowledge and first-hand experience in tackling various issues. But the recent COVID19 pandemic has made it very difficult for the NPO’s to even keep it breathing in this drowning situation.
For starters, there is a lack of funding to such organizations making them vulnerable to even sustain in their noble attempt to undertake charitable work. Those individuals and groups who have made a formal agreement to support the NPO’s are worried about their own sustenance and hence not releasing the amounts promised. For those who have only made a verbal promise, the accounting remains grim.
Asking for resources in the pandemic times is a herculean task in itself. Making it very predictable that future fundings are likely to decline.
Businesses and individuals are more likely to infuse their resources into projects which would yield them sure profits. Investing in NPO’s does not seem to be on cards in the future for such businesses.
Due to a lack of funds, charitable organizations are downsizing their staff. For even essential service delivery requires a robust workforce which only works when sufficient rewards are provided.
Even if there are volunteers who are willing to help in the service delivery, they are not able to help due to the health issues that this pandemic has brought us.
All in all, the immediate needs of the community are affected which has, in turn, led to a loss in trust amongst those seeking help from such NPO’s.
Thus there is an urgent need to support and enhance the functioning of NPO’s. For this, we should create a model for a greater risk-sharing so that the NPO’s do not get crushed in the financial risk alone. As an immediate measure, we can establish a COVID19 response investment mechanism to support NPO’s who are directly affected by the pandemic. Lastly and most importantly the government and philanthropists should come forward and infuse the NPO’s with resources for the collective good of the society.
